Talk // Wildflowers of Ohio

December 11, 2017

September through November of this year, the Llyod Library hosted a few events around their theme ‘Wild about Wildflowers’. I attended the first talk, Ohio’s Rarest Plants & Habitats and loved it so much, I signed up for this one weeks ahead of time. My post on Ohio’s Rarest Plants & Habitats has more detail on some of the best places to go to see wildflowers in Ohio. This talk focused on lots of varieties and showcased photos of each.

Between the two talks, my eyes have been opened to the variety of wildflowers we have in Ohio! It was especially great to get details on when and where to find some of them in bloom. I can definitely see myself planning a family trips around some wildflower action!

The talk was by Brian Jorg, who is a really engaging speaker and an amazing photographer. Brian is the Manager of the Native Plant Program at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden. He does a lot though, so definitely check out his website!

Some of my favorite wildflowers he touched on were:

  • Arisaema triphyllum (Jack in the Pulpit) – Link

  • Cypripedium reginae (Showy Lady’s Slipper) – Link

  • Frasera caroliniensis (American Columbo) – Link

  • Viola pedata (Bird’s-foot Violet) – Link

  • Asplenium rhizophyllum (Walking Fern) – Link

  • Erythronium americanum (Yellow Trout-lily) – Link

  • Stylophorum diphyllum (Wood Poppy) – Link

  • Dodecatheon meadia (Shooting Star) – Link

  • Isotria verticillata (Large Whorled Pogonia) – Link

  • Phlox adsurgens (Woodland Phlox) – Link

Hello! I'm Nikki and I'm in the second year of establishing my farm in Cincinnati, OH. I grow cut flowers for sale, food for my family, and experiment with native varieties for bouquets, food and dyes. I'm working to restore a large portion of my 5 acres to a more native state. I'm also the founder of Plantalytics, a technology startup creating digital tools to save small farmers time on planning and recordkeeping.
